BART commuters warned about electronics thieves

Oakland police and BART police warned commuters Thursday about thieves who snatch people's electronic gadgets. The two agencies report a recent spike in people being robbed of smart phones, iPads, and laptops.

Officers point out thieves prey on people who appear to be distracted while using their electronic devices. "This is a quick and easy turnaround sale for our suspects. When these electronic devices are taken, they can be easily sold and turned around for ready cash," OPD Ofc. Johnna Watson explained.

"They are happening when people are actually leaving the stations as well, so they're on the trains, in the parking lots, right here in this bus zone area, all over," BART Ofc. Era Jenkins said.

Both police departments say people can avoid becoming robbery victims by hiding their electronic devices in bags, purses, or brief cases while walking or using public transit.
