Search for burglary suspect in West Oakland called off

OAKLAND, Calif.

Streets had been closed in the area since this morning as police attempted to make contact with a burglary suspect believed to be hiding in a home in the 1400 block of 12th Street, police Officer Johnna Watson said.

The burglary was reported at about 9:30 a.m. when police were notified by an alarm and calls from neighbors that a burglar had entered the single-family residence there.

Watson said the calls reporting the burglary indicated that the person was armed. The residents of the home were not there when the burglary was reported.

A SWAT team and hostage negotiators responded and attempted to make contact with the burglar but were unsuccessful. Police fired beanbag rounds at the residence as a "tactical deterrent" as well, Watson said.

Police said several streets were blocked off for safety precautions and residents in the immediate area were evacuated.

Center Street and Mandela Parkway from 11th Street to 14th Street were closed, as well as between Mandela Parkway and Kirkham Street on 12th Street.

The SWAT team entered the home and conducted a search shortly before 3 p.m. The standoff was called off shortly before 5 p.m., and the suspect remains at large, police said.
