Tsunami debris from Japan arrives in Hawaii

HONOLULU

Staffers with an ocean engineering firm spotted the bin floating in the ocean on Tuesday. Japanese consular officials on Friday confirmed that the blue bin is from Fukushima. It is the 12th confirmed piece of tsunami debris to arrive in U.S. or Canadian waters.

The bin had a "skirt" of gooseneck barnacles that helped weigh it down and keep it upright to better catch the wind. The company it belongs to went out of business after being hit by the tsunami, but recently started back up.
