BEYOND THE HEADLINES
November 18 & 25, 2012
Transgender Issues
Hosted by ABC7's Cheryl Jennings
This week's episode of "Beyond the Headlines" looks at the widespread discrimination faced by transgender people. They are people born in a body that does not match their gender identity.
According to the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the transgender community experiences unemployment at twice the rate of the national average.
In November 2012, San Francisco's Health Commission voted to establish a transgender program, including sexual re-assignment surgery, as part of the city's universal healthcare plan. The landmark decision makes San Francisco the first city in the United States to approve such a measure.
We talk about employment and healthcare challenges in the transgender community and explore resources that are available for people who want to learn more about transitioning.
Today's guests include local leaders who speak about their personal experiences and about the programs their respective organizations offer.
