Officers say Richard Johnson was suicidal and barricaded himself inside his apartment with a shotgun after physically assaulting his girlfriend.
She was able to get away and call police.
SWAT officers responded and began negotiations with Johnson.
Officials say he eventually surrendered seven hours later.
