Bomb threat cleared at Lawrence Berkeley office

EMERYVILLE, Calif.

The search centered around a building used by the Department of Energy near Hollis and 59th Street. The evacuation was originally called for one building, but around 10:30 a.m. authorities expanded the perimeter and evacuations to include the surrounding buildings in the area. The evacuations were lifted around 1:15 p.m.

Initially authorities were responding to a bomb threat made to the Lawrence Berkeley Lab -- that takes up two floors of the building. The threat came in around 7 a.m. to a division of the lab called JBEI, which works on creating alternative fuel from non-food plants. The building takes up about a city block and 6,000 people work inside it.
