Family ordered to clean front yard or vacate home

SAN MATEO, Calif.

The city of San Mateo has been battling with the owners for over 15 years and wants the property declared a public nuisance.

The home is owned by Mark and Kimberly Klaiber, who even put up a tent in front of their house to keep out code inspectors.

"Existence of trash and debris and other personal property creates a fire hazard. The court order refers to combustible property," said Lance Bayer from the San Mateo City Attorney's office.

Those combustible items include trash, cardboard and paints that could catch fire.

If the owners don't clear out the front yard and fix code violations like exposed insulation, the city will do it for them and send them the bill.
