According to the research, when the San Francisco Unified School District offered up to 13 percent more per year for teaching positions, more teachers applied, and most were more qualified than those applying for positions that paid less.
"What this shows is that a more urban, lower-income district can raise salaries and draw some of the teachers who, without that increase, might have only gone to districts that pay more," said study co-author Heather Hough.
The researchers say they hope policymakers will use the research to help improve the lowest-performing schools across the state.
