A man killed on Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland early Sunday morning has been identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as 30-year-old Castro Valley resident Esequiel Perez, Jr.

At about 12:15 a.m., a paratransit van was traveling east on Highway 580 near Dutton Avenue when the driver saw a vehicle stopped in the center median, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Ezery Beauchamp said.

When the van got closer, the driver saw Perez running across the roadway and tried to avoid hitting him but wasn't able to, Beauchamp said.

Perez was struck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The van was reported to be traveling at 65 mph, Beauchamp said.

The CHP is investigating the incident.
