It was a terrifying morning for a preschool community in East Oakland Monday after gun shots were fired outside a Head Start facility sending bullets through car windshields and one victim to the hospital.

Police say they received a call just before 9 a.m. about shots fired at 92nd Avenue and International Boulevard. The area was littered with shell casings and multiple vehicles were also struck by gunfire.

There were children inside the nearby school building when the gunfire erupted. Head Start is a comprehensive child development program designed to help low-income families. It aims to foster social skills and school readiness in children.

The victim of the shooting was transported to Children's Hospital, but police have not released their identity or the extent of their injuries.

An investigation into the shooting continues.
