San Francisco is one of the nation's big cities where smartphone thieves are a growing menace. And now city leaders are taking the national stage, talking about ways to fight the crime.

If you're a victim, they urge you to not even think about chasing down the thief who just ran off with all your personal information, pictures, and videos.

"We have a large number of victims that are being subjected to a robbery they are often hurt physically almost always getting hurt emotionally," SF District Attorney George Gascon said.

Police are now cracking down on overseas black markets where stolen smartphones can fetch as much as $1,000.

In New York and Chicago, undercover cops even pose as smartphone sellers to arrest buyers who take the bait; giving new meaning to the term "buyer beware."
