Jonathan Jay Mouton, 21, was one of three people who died in the crash on Monday.
The driver, 25-year-old Paul Diaz, allegedly fled the scene on foot, but turned himself in to Daly City police later that afternoon.
Mouton's best friend Carlos Maturana helped to organize the car wash. He is hoping to raise $5,000 so his friend can be laid to rest.
"Half of me is gone, you know what I mean?" Maturana said. "My right hand man helped me out whenever I needed help. Anything. Never had to think about it just came over whenever I needed help."
Diaz appeared in court on Thursday. He is accused of driving under the influence at 90 miles an hour.
He rear-ended a car on Hillsdale Boulevard in Colma. His Mustang split in two, killing 22-year-old Ruvin Abel Vasquez and 23-year-old Rosa Maria Falla. Falla is believed to have been in a dating relationship with Diaz.
Bail was raised to $1 million Thursday. Diaz will return to court on June 13 to enter a plea.
