The iconic San Francisco bookstore that became the first to publish poetry by some of the literary world's best writers celebrated its 60th year in business Sunday.

Birthday cake, poetry readings and music greeted customers at City Lights Bookstore in North Beach.

The legendary independent book store and publisher was founded by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti in 1953 as the nation's all paperback bookstore.

In 2001, the store was named a local landmark by the city.
