3 arrested trying to stop Willits bypass

WILLITS, Calif.

Two of those taken in to custody were extracted from a 50-foot oak tree, apparently the last remaining tree in the construction path.

The highway patrol used several lifts to remove the demonstrators -- one, a man known as "Condor" and the other, a woman, calls herself "Blue Heron."

The protesters are trying to block or downsize the construction of a four lane highway that Caltrans is building through some wetlands.

The new roadway would bypass the town of Willits on Highway 101 in Mendocino County, 150 miles north of San Francisco.
