Apple one step closer to new campus in Cupertino

CUPERTINO, Calif.

Cupertino's planning commission approved the saucer-shaped building Wednesday night.

Plans call for nearly 3.5 million square feet of new office space, a 1,000-seat auditorium and a fitness center on the 176-acre campus.

The main, ring-shaped building would be a little more than 2.8 million square feet alone. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2016.

It's expected to house more than 14,000 employees.

Wednesday night's vote paves the way for the city council to formally approve the plan on Oct. 15.
