The search for a police chief in Oakland is back to square one.

Sean Whent is currently the city's top cop, but only on an interim basis. He has indicated he wants the job permanently.

Oakland has had four police chiefs since 2009.

A consultant hired to find a new one has now backed out; saying city officials meddled in the selection process.

Mayor Jean Quan disagrees, saying staffers are helping vet the candidates.
