An East Bay transgender teenager has entered a deal that could lead prosecutors to drop battery charges against her.

Jewlyes Gutierrez admits to starting a fight last year at Hercules High School. But she claims she acted in self-defense against a student who had been bullying her.

More than 200,000 people signed a petition to drop the charges against her.

Thursday, a Contra Costa County superior court judge allowed Gutierrez to enter a restorative justice program. If she completes it, the charges could be dropped.
