PESCADERO, Calif. -- Authorities are investigating how a 7-foot-long Burmese python ended up under a car parked outside of a school in Pescadero on Friday afternoon, San Mateo County sheriff's officials said today.

A deputy on patrol at Pescadero Elementary and Middle School at 620 North St. noticed a large snake under a parked car at 3:13 p.m. Friday.

The snake was 7 feet long, 4.5 inches wide and weighs about 40 pounds, sheriff's officials said.

Investigators said they do not know where the snake came from or who it belongs to. The animal was turned over to the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA.
