As cash goes out of fashion, ATM fees soar

As cash goes out of fashion, ATM fees are going up.

The average out-of-network ATM withdrawal fees hit a new high of $4.52.

The latest annual survey by Bankrate, shows using an out of network ATM has gone up 21 percent over the past five years.

Bankrate's Greg McBride says all of these fees are avoidable. He said, "Plan ahead on when and where you make your withdraws, you want to make that on your bank's turf, not someone else's. If you are really in a pinch for cash, you can get cash back at a point of sale using your debit card."

As fewer of us use out of network ATMs banks have tried to make up for the per transaction losses by raising fees.
