TEMPE, Ariz. (KGO) -- Home furnishing giant Ikea is trying to entice customers to take home a new pet along with their new couch or table.

The Swedish company is teaming up with local animal shelters as part of a pilot project called "Home for Hope."

Ikea posted video on YouTube to show how it will work.

As part of the project, the company is putting cardboard cutouts of dogs and cats living at nearby shelters in their showrooms.

Shoppers will be able to scan codes on the cutouts to get more information about the pets.

An Ikea store in Tempe, Arizona is the first U.S. store to participate in the program.
