Search called off for suspect who escaped Contra Costa County Jail

MARTINEZ, Calif. (KGO) -- Police have called off a search for a woman who she escaped custody in the vicinity of the county jail in Martinez this evening, according to the Martinez Police Department.



The incident was reported via Twitter around 7:35 p.m.



A woman in the custody of the San Pablo Police Department was being transported to the Martinez Detention Center, but she ran off before they could get her into the jail, according to Martinez police.



The escaped subject has been described as a black woman, roughly 5 feet 6 inches tall and 145 pounds. She was wearing black pants, a gray sweatshirt and handcuffs, according to police.



Around 8:45 p.m. Martinez police reported that due to the non-violent nature of the woman's original crimes the search has been called off.



Further questions were referred to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office and the San Pablo Police Department, who could not immediately be reached for comment.
