The incident occurred after 8:15 p.m. in the Sunset District at Sloat Boulevard and Everglade. Police issued a shelter-in-place for the area.
According to Officer Carlos Manfredi, police responded to a report of a mentally disturbed person at a shopping center. The man, a white male in his 20s or 30s, did not comply and fired several rounds at police. The suspect then fled on foot and headed towards Stern Grove Park.
A search ensued and dozens of officers fanned out through the area, looking for the suspect. The suspect then emerged from the bushes near the park and there was an exchange of gunfire at 27th Ave. and Vicente. The suspect was then shot, according to police.
Sources say the officer, a young man, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital. He is conscious and talking and is expected to survive.
The suspect was also taken to SF General for treatment, but there was no word on his condition.
