SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- About 50 disabled veterans were invited by the San Francisco 49ers to have some fun on the practice field with some of the players.

War veterans gathered outside Levi's Stadium on Monday afternoon. It was an invitation-only event hosted by the 49ers.

Tight-end Garrett Celek paired up with someone with a lot of grit, Geoffery Quevedo, a veteran, who lost part of his leg and arm in Afghanistan nearly five years ago.

"You have two options, you sit in your sorrow or you embrace it and move forward and that's what I've done," Quevedo said.

About 50 veterans registered online for the event called Wounded Warrior Training Day.

"I think they're the ones who will be giving me some pointers and I know there are a few football drills we'll put them through," Celek said.

Veterans tried their skills at archery, power-lifting and rowing.

"That was really the thought behind this was if we could help our athletes both able-bodied and those with challenges to learn from each other today that it would bring us all closer together," said Joanne Pasternack, a spokesperson with the San Francisco 49ers.

"There are things that you can and can't do and I do mainly all the things I used to do. I used to play soccer and I used to run and I still do it," Quevedo said.

This is the first event of its kind involving a professional football team. The hope now is that other NFL teams will follow.
