State Superintendent Thurmond announces efforts to stop racism in schools

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond held a virtual news conference to announce new efforts being launched at the California Department of Education to confront the hate, bigotry, and racism rising in communities across the state and nation.

Thurmond was joined by several cultural and diversity leaders to discuss ways to confront systemic racism. The superintendent announced a new mini-grant program to get professional involvement to help with conversations on race and bias.

"It's heartbreaking to see acts of hate play out. We need to teach about the beauty of diversity in our country," said Thurmond.

In October, the CDE will host a new series of virtual classroom sessions, to engage students, educators, and families in a wide-ranging dialogue about the many forms of bias young people across California face and ways to end discrimination.
