VALLEJO, Calif. (KGO) -- The bots are back! Razor sharp, flame throwing, crushing hunks of metal still dominate in the ring. But this revival of the ABC hit show "BattleBots" is more than cold steel.

ABC7 News reporter Leyla Gulen got down to the nuts and bolts of what makes a good competitor.

"BattleBots" competitor Zoe Stephenson says he's helping to prove that bot building isn't just for guys.

"I was glad to see that I wasn't the only female team captain at the event," she said. "And it is a male dominated sport and I got to thinking you know what, it can't hurt to try. Little girls out there, you can do it! Keep taking science and math classes and work hard."

Stephenson's terrifying BattleBot "Chomp" took an impressive three months to build for a hefty $20,000.

You can catch the carnage in the series premiere of the new "BattleBots" at 9 p.m. on ABC7.
