SAN NOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Last night on Jeopardy!, a popular comedian helped shine the spotlight on a little-known women's health issue and the group that is trying to fix it.

Comedian Louis C.K. outsmarted the competition, winning $50,000 for charity.

"I was starting to write fistula, that's my charity," C.K. said on Jeopardy!

"All these people are watching Jeopardy! that have never heard of fistula, he's saying basically I'm here to play for this charity, and they're like, what's the charity?" said Kate Grant of the Fistula Foundation.

Grant serves as CEO of the Fistula Foundation in San Jose, and says the comedian wanted to get involved in an issue where women were underserved. A friend of a friend made the connection four years ago.

"Awareness is the first step, and that's what Louis has helped us with, opening hearts and minds, and then our job is to get those wallets open, so that we can help more women," Grant said.

Fistula is a child-birth injury caused by prolonged obstructed labor and is often found in poor countries in Africa and Asia. The injury renders women incontinent.

Last year, the foundation raised nearly $8 million, resulting in more than 5,000 life-changing surgeries.

Eighth grader Roland Jose has volunteered in the office since he was 10. His mom had a tough time giving birth, but was saved by doctors.

"It's really a huge influence on me, and that's why I keep on coming back. I'm reminded of what happened, and I want to help more and more people," said San Jose resident Roland Jose.

Grant says volunteers like Jose and CK make all the difference.

"In places where you don't have Depends pads, you don't have hot running water, multiple changes of clothes, that injury can be devastating, not just physically, but emotionally, too often makes her an outcast in her own community," Grant said.

Spreading the word to anyone who'll listen.

Jeopardy! airs weeknights at 7 p.m. on ABC7.
