LOS ALTOS, Calif. (KGO) -- He saved Private Ryan and now he's lending a big hand to some local girl scouts. Tom Hanks made a surprise visit to Los Altos late last month.

According to the Los Altos Town Crier, not only did the Bay Area native buy four boxes of cookies from a troop along State Street, he tipped $20 dollars and helped sell even more cookies. When people starting asking to take pictures with him, the Oscar winner replied: "yes - but only if you buy cookies from these young ladies."

Hanks wasn't just there for the cookies, his son Truman is a freshman at Stanford.
