MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- A couple was enjoying the surf in Miami Beach, when they found themselves in a rip current.

The wife says her husband gave everything to save her.

Kendra Smith and her husband Sherrod Whittington were playing in the Florida waves when the powerful rip current swept them away.

Smith says her husband yelled to the lifeguards to save her first, which they did.

Lifeguards then got a hold of Whittington who was passed out when they got him to shore.

They started CPR right away, but were not able to revive him.

Smith says she will never forget what her husband did for her.

"Life is just so short. I would have never guessed in a million years that we would go have fun and the next thing you know, he's gone. But he'll always be my hero," she said.

Smith says the pair had been married for two years and loved having fun together.
