94-year-old serves as flower girl in granddaughter's wedding

Weddings are all about family, but one woman recently found a unique way to include her grandmother in the festivities.

When Laura VanPelt was deciding who she would ask to serve as the flower girl for her wedding, she went for an unconventional choice. Rather than picking a young niece or cousin, the Michigan woman asked her 94-year-old grandmother to fill the role.

"When she asked me, I just laughed," Helen Kavanaugh told The Grand Rapids Press. "I thought she was kidding, of course.

But VanPelt was serious; she wanted her family's matriarch to be part of the processional on her special day. And Kavanaugh was happy to oblige. So last weekend, it played out in the bride's parents' backyard -- Kavanaugh, wearing a dress her granddaughter helped pick out, tossed petals down the aisle ahead of the bride.

It was a special moment for the entire family, but more so for Kavanaugh who called it, "the biggest thrill I've ever had I think." Photographer Mallory Chrisman said Kavanaugh appeared to be "overjoyed" to be walking down the aisle and the wedding guests seemed to share her excitement.
