SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- On this day in 1933, construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge. Work was completed four years later and the bridge officially opened on May 27, 1937.

The bridge spans the Golden Gate strait, the one-mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
