Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry shows up at Oakland school to promote health

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry showed up at an Oakland school Tuesday to help promote the importance of good health and fitness.

For the students, Curry was a symbol of what it means to be active and fit.

Curry paid a visit to East Oakland's Manzanita Community School to encourage young students to keep up their good work in and outside the classroom.

Manzanita is a prime example of the Playworks program in action. "In northern California we provide 60,000 children service a day in 111 schools and make sure they're involved in safe, healthy and inclusive play," Playworks executive director Nathanial Foster said.

At Manzanita, the good habits extend to the lunchroom where each child must take at least one item from the salad bar every day and actually eat it.

What happens in the lunchroom pays off on the playground at Manzanita where running the mile is child's play. "Eleven laps here is equal to one mile. My kindergartners can run two miles and that's very impressive," Playworks Coach Nick Barreto said.

Now, that's a stat even Curry could be proud of.
