Deadline to sign up for 'Covered California' extended a few days

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The deadline to sign up for health insurance under "Covered California" has been extended - sort of.

People who sign up for coverage before Tuesday's deadline will have coverage that begins on March 1, 2017. The deadline was extended to allow anyone who has begun their application on Tuesday to finish it by February 4th.

That extension is good news for anyone who needs more time. "Experience tells us that people often wait until the last minute to sign up for health care, and we want to make sure we don't leave anyone behind," Monica Tracht with Covered California told ABC7 News.

In Monica's office, they are seeing more urgency than in past years. "I think people were taking it not too seriously, but now they are," Tracht said.

As President Trump vows to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, concerns swirled over the future of the plans offered through Covered California.

The Centers for Disease Control reports the uninsured rate for the state has fallen from 17 percent in 2013 to just over 7 percent last year.
