RICHMOND, Calif. -- Firefighters have brought a vegetation fire along Interstate Highway 80 near Richmond under control this evening, according to a fire marshal with the Contra Costa Fire Protection District.

The incident was reported at 7:39 p.m. along several hundred yards of the right hand shoulder on westbound Highway 80 near Fitzgerald drive and the Richmond Parkway off-ramp. The fire was under control at roughly 8:15 p.m., according to Fire Marshal Robert Marshall.

Structures were initially threatened by the fire, Marshall said, but that part of the fire was quickly brought under control.

The size of the blaze is currently thought to be less than one acre, according to Marshall.

The California Highway Patrol has issued a Sig-alert for westbound Highway 80 at the Richmond Parkway off-ramp. The off-ramp and right hand lanes of the roadway are closed due to the presence of emergency vehicles.
