Safety is gaining ground in the auto industry despite tougher standards -- 71 vehicles have earned top honors in crash safety tests -- which is up from 39 last year.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2015 models of Toyota Prius, Ford Focus and Honda Civic ranked high in safety tests for small cars.

The 2015 models of the Chrysler 200, Mazda 6 and Ford Fusion scored well for mid-size vehicles. And the 2015 models of the Honda CRV, Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain took home high marks in the SUV category.
