SAN FRANCISCO -- The big lead up to the annual AIDS Walk San Francisco is off and running.

7 On Your Side's Michael Finney hosted Wednesday night's kick-off event at Rouge.

The annual walk will be held July 20th in Golden Gate Park and ABC7 is a proud sponsor.

Back in 1987 6,000 people were part of the first AIDS Walk. It has now grown to more than 25,000 and all the funds go to research and supporting people living with HIV, AIDS and Hepatitis C.

Event director Demetri Rizos said, "People still need help, they still need medical care. People still need to pay their rent, to see the doctor. We hope someday to be close to a cure but we're not there yet. We've accomplished a lot but we have a ways to go."

They hope to raise at least $2.6 million this year.

The San Francisco AIDS Walk is less than a month away. You can register by calling 415-615-9255 or 415-615-WALK.
