SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The work of influential animator Mel Shaw will go on display starting Wednesday at the Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio.

It's a rare opportunity for fans of the classic Disney films. The exhibit features Shaw's work from his years with Disney, as well as his own art, highlighting his affection for animals and western themes.

Shaw was one of the first Disney animators, recruited by Disney himself in 1937.

"He participated in some of the early blockbusters, "Bambi," "Fantasia," and his influence was evident throughout the years, and he was there up through the early 90's and helped out with "Beauty and the Beast" and "Lion King," said Kirsten Komoroske.

The Walt Disney Family Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Click here to learn more about the exhibit.

Disney is the parent company of ABC7.
