Suspect in custody after Michigan shootings

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Authorities in the Kalamazoo, Michigan area say a man is in custody in connection with the random shooting deaths of six people and wounding of three.

The Latest in the shootings in the Kalamazoo, Michigan area (all times local):

1 a.m.

Police say the suspect taken into custody by police following a series of shootings in the Kalamazoo, Michigan area is a 45-year-old white male.

Michigan State Police Lt. Dale Hinz told WWMT-TV says that officers are questioning the suspect, who is from Kalamazoo County.

Hinz calls the shootings at three separate locations, "incomprehensible." Six people were killed.

12:40 a.m.

Police say they have apprehended a suspect in a series of shootings in the Kalamazoo, Michigan area.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas told WWMT-TV that a man was detained in downtown Kalamazoo.

Matyas says the man did not resist when approached by law enforcement officers. Matyas says weapons were found in the man's vehicle.

Asked if he was confident that the man apprehended by police is the person who carried out the shootings, Matyas said: "The threat to the public is over. We now have our suspect."

11:45 p.m.

Six people have been killed and three injured in what police describe as a series of random shootings around the Kalamazoo, Michigan area.

Two of the injured are in critical condition and one is in serious condition.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas says a manhunt is under way for a suspect described as an older white male, perhaps in his 50s, driving a dark blue vehicle.

The shootings took place on Saturday evening in parking lots at three locations - a Cracker Barrel restaurant, a Ford dealership and an apartment complex.

Matyas says that police believe the shootings do not appear to be targeting certain people.

"These are random murders," he said.

Police say multiple people have died from several shootings that appear to be related in the Kalamazoo, Michigan area.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas told WOOD-TV that a suspect appears to be driving around the area and targeting people.

"We have multiple people dead," Matyas says.

Police are looking for the suspect.
