OAKLEY, Calif. -- Residents in the Oakley area may smell the odor of natural gas Sunday as PG&E conducts planned safety work as part of a pipeline upgrade project.

Utility crews will be working on the pipeline today at Bridgehead Road in Oakley.

PG&E says people may smell gas today at homes or businesses near the job site depending on wind direction, but the gas will quickly dissipate into the atmosphere and will not be harmful. Service outages are not expected to occur during today's work, according to PG&E.

The project is scheduled to begin before noon, and should be complete within an hour of starting, PG&E officials said.
