SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Santa Cara County has raised the legal age to buy tobacco and electronic smoking products from 18 to 21.

It's the first county in the country to pass such an ordinance, which takes effect Jan. 1.

Stores will be required to post a notice of the new minimum age and ask for identification.

County supervisors say the higher age requirement clearly puts the health of youth before any special interests.
