FREMONT, Calif. -- A suspect has been arrested in a Wednesday attempted sexual assault in Fremont.

Christopher Ruelas-Fernandez, 27, of Newark, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of assault to commit rape, according to police.

On Wednesday at 7:40 p.m., a woman reported to police she had just been attacked by a man in the area of Walnut Avenue and Gallaudet Drive.

Police said the victim had just exited a bus and was walking in the 800 block of Walnut Avenue when a man came up from behind and attacked her.

The victim told police the suspect placed a hand over her mouth and started dragging her into a parking lot.

The victim fought back, was able to scream and alerted two men walking in the area, police said.

The suspect then fled the area on a bicycle. The victim suffered minor injuries in the attack. Investigators were able to obtain video of the incident.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for Ruelas-Fernandez on Thursday, and he was taken into custody near his residence in Newark.
