SF Mayor raises age to buy tobacco products to 21

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Soon, you'll have to be at least 21-years-old to buy tobacco products in San Francisco after Mayor Ed Lee signed a sweeping new law at city hall on Friday.

It raises the age to buy cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes from 18 to 21 in the city.

It begins in July.

State lawmakers followed the city's lead on Thursday by approving a similar bill covering all of California.

It's now up to Governor Jerry Brown to sign that statewide law into effect.
