Search on for inmate who escaped from Santa Cruz jail

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KGO) -- A minimum-security inmate from the California Correctional Center walked away from Ben Lomond Conservation Camp on Friday.

Inmate LeRoy Hampton, 46, is 5' 11", 178 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. He was committed to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on June 7, 2001, from Fresno County for Robbery 1st. He was scheduled to be released from CDCR custody on April 27, 2019

Hampton was assigned to an inmate firefighting crew at in Santa Cruz, California. The camp houses approximately 110 minimum-custody inmates.

Hampton was last seen by staff at 10:15 p.m. during a routine security check of the camp. He was observed by camp staff leaving the camp perimeter.

Hampton was last seen wearing grey sweat clothing. Attempts to get Hampton to return on his own accord produced negative results.

Local law enforcement agencies and the California Highway Patrol were notified and are assisting in the search for Hampton. All responding law enforcement agencies are continuing with the search and apprehension efforts at this time.
