ANTIOCH, Calif. -- A toddler drowned Tuesday when she accidentally fell into a plastic swimming pool outside the family's Antioch home, police said Wednesday.

Antioch police initially responded to the residence in the 1900 block of Evergreen Avenue at 12:58 p.m. and provided life-saving measures to the child, who was unresponsive.

The baby girl, identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office today as 1-year-old Andrea Gonzales, was taken to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Although an investigation is being conducted, police said preliminary information indicates the child died as a result of "a terrible accident" involving her falling into the backyard swimming pool.
