Bay Area congressional leaders celebrated the anniversary of women's right to vote.

Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi tweeted out, "Women's equality day reminds us that equality benefits everyone: daughters and granddaughters, sons and grandsons."

NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says gender equality may be one of the most important issues facing society.

"Men are going to have to realize they made a very cushy situation for themselves and that can't continue like that and it's going to be uncomfortable for them to give up some of that power and comfort," Abdul-Jabbar said.

Also Friday, Apple, Facebook, Target and 26 other U.S. companies have signed onto the White House's Equal Pay Pledge. It includes a promise to conduct a yearly analysis of pay by gender, as well as review hiring and the promotion process.
