Rescuers call off search for missing kayaker near Dumbarton Bridge

FREMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- Rescuers have called off their search for a San Jose man who vanished in the chilly waters of San Francisco Bay near Fremont on Tuesday.

Search teams from several agencies launched boats near the Dumbarton Bridge when the tide was high enough Wednesday morning. They searched a wide area before low tide forced them to stop.

Trouble began when Kenneth Maldonado's kayak started taking on water Tuesday. The 32-year-old then disappeared while a friend was towing him back to shore. "It was very cold last night, so if he had gotten himself out of the water up on one of the levees, there's still a chance," Fremont Fire Dept. Div. Chief Diane Hendry said.

Fremont firefighters also used drones to search areas that are hard to reach by boat.
