BART board considers surcharge on paper tickets to close deficit

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- If you ride BART and still use a paper ticket, you may want to reconsider getting a Clipper card.

During a BART Board of Directors meeting Thursday, members discussed adding a 50-cent surcharge for all paper ticket holders. Three out of 10 riders use paper tickets.

The board is working to find a way to close a $18 million budget shortfall.

Another idea on the table is to make kids under 12 pay a little more. But one BART director told ABC7 News he thinks that would send the wrong message.

"I want to make certain that a family is incentivized to go on trips, to go to the ballgame, to take trips to San Francisco on the weekends, and not have to worry about the total costs," said Robert Raburn.

BART's budget deficit was nearly cut in half with the passage of the governor's gas tax.
