SAN MATEO (KGO) -- Police say a high-speed chase in San Mateo began with car burglaries and ended with a serious crash at El Camino Real and Hillsdale Boulevard. Police say two suspects crashed into a concrete pole outside the Hillsdale Mall just before 5 a.m.

San Mateo Police Sergeant Rick Decker says this all started when someone in the Crystal Springs neighborhood called police to report someone trying to break into cars. One officer spotted them and police said the two male suspects sped off southbound on El Camino.

"As they were driving they were throwing stolen property out the window. So they were out victimizing vehicles throughout the night," said Decker.

They hit another car and then slammed into the cement pole. Both were taken into custody and to the hospital where they're being treated for injuries. Decker says one of them has been identified as a 23-year-old from Oakland who has a long history of violent offenses.

"The unfortunate part is because of changes more often than not we are seeing violent offenders committing property related crimes," said Decker.

Police said only one of the suspects is cooperating, the other won't tell police his name.

Nobody else was hurt.
