SAN MATEO, Calif. (KGO) -- San Mateo County Sheriff officials received a report Friday morning of three mountain lions spotted in Portola Valley neighborhood.

The mountain lions were seen near Westridge Drive and Cervantes Road at about 11:30 p.m. on Thursday. That's two miles west of Highway 280.

Mountain lions are extremely solitary animals and normally avoid people. Attacks on humans are very rare with only 16 verified in California since 1890.

The last documented attack was in 2007 in Humboldt County.
