Man pleads not guilty to deadly street race in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A young man accused in a deadly street race entered a plea of not guilty in court on Monday. Gabriel Esparza faces charges of manslaughter.

Police say the 18-year-old and another driver, 23-year-old Manuel Anthony Maldonado-Avalos, held a street race last month on Yerba Buena Road in San Jose.

At least one of the cars careened onto the sidewalk, striking and killing 24-year-old Kiran Pabla, who was jogging near her home.

Police say 24-year-old Kiran Pabla was killed by two drivers who were speeding down Yerba Buena Road in San Jose, Calif. on Jan. 26, 2015.

Prosecutors claim the drivers were going 75 miles per hour.

The defense says a witness claims sparse appeared to be going the speed limit.

Maldonado-Avalos, returns to court next month.
