NAPA, Calif. (KGO) -- Napa's missing moose tree made a surprise appearance on Monday morning. Someone dropped off the moose-shaped tree branch at the foot of Mayor Jill Techel's driveway on the President's Day holiday.

The unusual looking branch that grew off the side of a eucalyptus tree had become a cultural icon, with people painting the "moose" different colors during big events.

Napa's famous moose tree is painted in support of the San Francisco Giants.

It was sawed off and stolen on New Year's Eve.

The mayor says police are trying to figure out who dropped the moose off.

"It was interesting," Techel said. "When we looked at it, the head was completely sawed through, so someone had done it very carefully as not to harm it, other than taking it off the tree."

The owner of Downtown Joe's had said previously whenever the moose head got turned in, he wouldn't ask any questions and would simply mount it on the wall for the entire community to enjoy.
